It was once believed the first humans to arrive in the Americas were the Clovis Culture, after the glaciers of the last Ice Age receded, nearly 13,000 years ago. Their artifacts have been found at hundreds of sites. These were likely the ancestors of many of today’s Amerindians.
But new archeological finds and genetic evidence suggest that people came to the New World much earlier, likely before 20,000 years ago, perhaps even more than 30,000 years ago, well before the peak of the last ice age. Who were these Native Americans who arrived before the Native Americans?
Razib Khan is the director of operations at FUTO, a consumer technology company in Austin, TX. With over ten years in the genomics space, he developed ancestry algorithms for Gene By Gene, The Genographic Project and Insitome. He also writes at Razib Khan’s Unsupervised Learning.
