Join PALLADIUM Magazine in San Francisco on Sunday, October 18 to hear the next lecture in our ongoing series, this one by Samo Burja, author of “Why Civilizations Collapse.“ The article was featured in our most recent print edition PALLADIUM 19: Long History.
We think of our own society as so technologically advanced that it couldn’t possibly collapse. What if we are terribly wrong?
Every advanced civilization before ours eventually saw its end. Great cities such as Mohenjo Daro, Mycenae, Hattusa, Petra, and Rome were ruined and some completely forgotten. In the twelve dark ages of recorded human history key institutions vanished, poverty grew, populations declined, knowledge was forgotten, and advanced technology was lost.
Artificial intelligence ultimately relies on the same foundations, from industrial supply chains to information commons, as much as human intelligence throughout history. What if AI-driven civilization, too, succumbs to forces as deep as time and entropy?
This talk will cover the theory and evidence of why there has never been an immortal society and what it would take to make one.
